Build a story bank
Prepare a small set of versatile stories that cover every competency.
- Collect six to eight strong stories from your experience.
- Map each story to the competencies it demonstrates.
- Adapt one story to several different questions.
You cannot predict every question, but you can prepare the material. A story bank is a short list of your best experiences, each written in STAR form and tagged with the competencies it shows. With six to eight versatile stories you can answer most behavioral questions without inventing anything on the spot.
Choosing and tagging stories
- Pick experiences with real stakes: a hard technical problem, a disagreement, a failure, a project you led, a time you helped a teammate grow.
- Prefer recent stories (the last two or three years) at the level you are targeting.
- Tag each story with the competencies it covers. A migration you led might show ownership, dealing with ambiguity, and influence.
- Check coverage: every common competency should have at least one story, ideally two.

The same story can answer different questions if you shift the emphasis. For “a time you disagreed”, focus the Action on how you handled the disagreement; for “a time you led without authority”, focus on how you brought others along. Avoid reusing one story for every answer in a single interview loop - variety shows range.
