Talk about failure and feedback

Own mistakes, show what you learned, and prove you changed.

20 min 5-question quiz
By the end of this lesson you can
  • Choose a genuine failure with real consequences.
  • Take ownership without excuses.
  • Show specific changes you made afterward.

“Tell me about a time you failed” and “Tell me about critical feedback you received” test self-awareness and growth. Everyone makes mistakes; interviewers want to see that you own them, fix what you can, and change how you work.

Structure for failure stories

  • A real failure: something that went wrong because of your decision or action, with consequences. Not a disguised strength (“I work too hard”).
  • Ownership: “I underestimated the migration’s risk” - no blaming others or circumstances.
  • Response: what you did to limit the damage at the time.
  • Learning and change: the specific habit or process you adopted, ideally with evidence that it worked later.

For feedback questions, the same arc applies: the feedback, your honest reaction, what you changed, and how you know it helped.

Example: “I shipped a schema change without a rollback plan and caused a 40-minute outage. I led the incident response and wrote the postmortem. Since then I write rollback steps into every migration plan, and our team adopted it as a checklist item - we have had no migration outages since.” The last sentence proves the learning stuck.

Key takeaways

  • Pick a real failure with consequences.

  • Own it without excuses.

  • Show concrete changes and evidence they worked.
